What are Apportioned TAG

Apportioned plates are for commercial vehicles only, such as trucks, are issued under the International Registration Plan, which is a cooperative agreement between the United States and Canada. Under the agreement, the base, or home, jurisdiction collects vehicle registration fees, which are then apportioned among the states or provinces that the vehicle travels through, depending on the total distance operated in each jurisdiction. The base jurisdiction issues the vehicle with a set of apportioned license plates and a cab card outlining the jurisdictions where the vehicle is allowed to operate.

The trucking company’s home state/province collects all of the required taxes and fees and then distributes them to all other states/provinces in which the company operates its trucks, according to the different amounts due to each state/province. The home state/province then issues a registration document which lists all states/provinces in which the company is authorized to operate, and the maximum weight at which the truck may operate in each of them. For most trucks, this will be 80,000 lbs. in US states, and its metric equivalent of 36,288 kg in Canadian provinces.

International Registration Plan or IRP is the system detailed in the previous paragraph. All of the lower 48 US states, plus the District of Columbia, and all 10 Canadian provinces participate in IRP. (Note, Alaska does not participate in IRP despite being reachable by road from the lower 48, and neither do Yukon, the Northwest Territories, or Nunavut.)
